This was an excellent guide for planning our itinerary. The 8th edition appears to be heavier than previous editions. I would recommend photocopying the pages you anticipate using instead of carrying the book on day hikes.

There is NO reason to have ANY other book. Don’t weight down your packs with anything else, this book is simply THE REFERENCE for hiking ANY of the parks in the Banff area. The trail descriptions are so explicit and so correct. The maps make everything a cinch.

For 15 days I used the Trail Guide to plan and execute my hikes. I did not backpack, but used the quide only for day hikes. The book always enabled me to easily find the trailhead. The desciptions of the hikes were always accurate and useful. The authors warn you about trails that are popular and crowded. They were. They also warn you of any difficulties that you might encounter. For example, for the Cory Pass- Mount Edith Circuit they give a caution: “Do not underestimate the physical exertion that this trail requires.” It was an exhausting day.
The Trail Guide enabled me to have 15 days of great hiking. I would highly recommend it for anyone’s vacation in the Canadian Rockies.
